There is plenty to do in and around the Black Forest. Haus Erika is ideally situated for those looking for something to occupy the family. Click on the pictures, and highlighted destinations for more information

Hasenhorn Rodelbahn.

Take the chairlift up the Hasenhorn and then enjoy the 2.9km descent through curves, waves and 3 mad spins back down to Todtnau. Easy

and safe for all of the family to enjoy. Beautiful trails

from the top of the chair lift provide some delightful

walks for young and old alike.

The Restaurant Hasenhorn provides an ideal spot for lunch or a drink to take in the panorama.

Just a short car ride away, there is an excellent day out for the younger generation at the Steinwasen Park. A chance to wander around a mountain wildlife park and observe the animals that still live freely in the Black Forest. The park also has one of the worlds longest hanging footbridges.

For those rainy days there is also the Badeparadise / Galaxy Schwarzwald. Fun for the kids or relaxation for the adults. You can spend the whole day here, in one of Europe's most modern leisure centres.

Finstergrund Bergwerk

Just one kilometer away from our house is Finstergrund Bergwerk. A mining museum which has the only train in the Black Forest which actually takes the visitors into the mine.

The museum is run completely by volunteers ( some who were miners

themselves ) who give tours, man the cafe ( where you can get a coffee and a lovely piece of gateau)and generally look after the museum. The mine opened to visitors in 1982.

Take a trip underground and back in time to see how local men worked in years gone by. Mining has taken place in Wieden from the 13th Century until 1972. Initially mining for silver and for lead ore, later the miners turned to mining for fluoride at the start of the 20th Century. From 1920 to 1972 some 20km of tunnels were excavated over a vertical distance of 360metres. And when you find it so much colder underground than in the warm summer air, you will maybe get an idea of the hardship endured by these hardy workers.

Open Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday from May to October.

A relaxing day ( after which you‘ll feel like you‘ve

been reborn ) can be had at the Thermal Spa Vita Classica. Here you can visit the saunas or simply take a swim in the different pools. There are massages and different treatments that can be booked once there.

Why not take a day trip to Triberg, billed as Germany‘s highest waterfalls ( although they are actually a cascade of waterfalls) where you're sure to be greeted by squirrels hoping to be fed ! Here, the River Gutach thunders down seven cascades totalling 163 metres in vertical drop. On your way there you could drop in at the German Clock Museum in Fürtwangen or visit the Schwarzwald Museum in Triberg! Triberg is also home to Joseph Keller ( 1887 - 1981), creator of the Black Forest Gateau. Click here for the link to the original cafe where the Black Forest Gateau was born!

A lovely day out for bird lovers is the Vogel Park in Steinen. Ten acres of parkland and birds from all over the world. Two times everyday there is a flying display by eagles, falcons and owls. When the weather is poor, there are alternative displays. There are also berber monkeys which maybe fed with the food supplied free of charge.

Open middle of March to November.

Another great day trip, for kids of all ages, is the Sauschwänzlibahn ( translated as the Pig Tail Train ).

You can take a wonderful ride on a steam train from Zollhaus-Blumberg to Weizen. A 3 hours journery over 27km through 39 tunnels.

A museum displays some marvellous

locomotives, photos and memorabilia along

with a signal box from 1886. This makes for

a tremendous day out and you can even

combine it with a bike ride if you want.

We are also ideally situated for visits to Europa Park. Rated as Europe’s top theme park by the Sunday Times travel magazine, Europa Park is not a great distance from Wieden. This theme park takes inspiration from across Europe with its rides and provides something for everybody. Bob sleigh runs from Switzerland, Silverstone car rides from England, Mir Space Station from Russia. From rides for young toddlers to the

thrills and spills desired by adrenaline seekers, Europa Park has it all. These are just a few ideas for day trips and things to do when you stay

with us.
